Windows

eKalappai

eKalappai is a software which can be used to easily type in tamil, in any application running on Microsoft® Windows™. This is not an open source application. eKalappai has it's own Unicode engine and doesn't require underlying operating system support to work. It was created using a software called Keyman™ by Tavultesoft® and is freely obtainable/distributable, for all uses (including commercial uses).

You can download the latest beta(testing) releases from the links below...

Note: All packages contain 3 GPL Tamil Unicode fonts.

GNU/Linux

SCIM

SCIM is an IME (Input Method Engine) for GNU/Linux. It allows input of Tamil (and other CTL-Complex Text Layout languages... eg:- Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Sinahala, etc.) using a standard English keyboard. Different keyboard layouts, such as Phonetic and Inscript are available.

We need to make available (develop) the following four keyboard layouts which are very popular:

  1. Anjal keyboard -> Its basically a transliteration keyboard - This seems to be the most popular keyboards used by most people who know only english keyboards. (For SCIM Mauran has already created this layout -- Mugunth)
  2. tamilnet99 -> The tamil Nadu govt approved computer keyboard for Tamil - its quite fast to type tamil with this ( i find this more effective than Anjal -- Mugunth )
  3. Bamini keyboard ->
    (I presume this is popular among the Srilankan Tamils. - Mugunth
    I agree as it is freely available online. My வள்ளுவன் layout is "based" on the puthuvai layout avaiable at the jaffnalibrary website. I said "based" becos this layout is quite differnt, when you use it you might notice the difference - Saru).
  4. New Tamil Typewriter keyboard -> this is popular among the Tamil Nadu tamils who have learned Tamil Typewriting.
  5. Sarangan's SCIM tables

... and package them in various formats (RPM, DEB, TGZ, etc.) for different GNU/Linux distributions.
